We have long manufactured door security devices for exterior entry doors, however we have never made products for interior doors....UNTIL NOW! Here's the story of why we created these new products...
Recently, one of our customers (a gentleman from Texas named Ernest) called us and asked:
"If an Intruder Does Get Into My House, Where Can I Go to Be Safe?"
The truth is...we did not have a GOOD answer at that point. However, Ernest did.
Here's what he said...
"I'm 78 years old and I'm very worried about what I would do if an intruder did actually get into my house. I'm always wondering where would I go within my house to be safe, somewhere that would give me enough extra time to call the police and to get my hands on my weapon. When I was younger, I didn't worry about this too much as I felt that I could somewhat better handle an intruder than I could now. But as time goes by, I have come to realize just how vulnerable my wife and I are.
So here's my suggestion...why don't you manufacture the same products so that they will fit on interior doors? This way, I can create somewhat of a "Safe Room" within my house, probably my bedroom."
After giving his suggestion much thought, we decided Ernest was definitely right. When you really think about it, where would most people go within their house to "be safer" or "buy some time" if an intruder should get in? Not having a good answer, we realized that we definitely should create the products as Ernest suggested, and so we did.
Below is what we initially installed on a bedroom door to create a our first quasi "safe room".
Initially, we installed the Door Security Kit on a standard (hollow core) bedroom door.
And initially, we installed the Door Lock Guard next to the door handle latch.
Then we painted each component with door and trim paint to perfectly match it's respective background.
Afterwards, We Decided to Make the Door Even More Secure...
We replaced the old hinges and we installed a new solid core bedroom door (the new door only cost $46 at Home Depot).
The old hinges and the standard short 3/4" long screws are shown on the left. The new hinges (less than $10) with some 3" T-20 Torx screws added are shown on the right.
Here are the new hinges installed. We also installed one 3" long T-20 screw into the center hole of each side of every hinge.
And Finally, We Installed a "Keyed" Door Handle Latch and a Deadbolt
This is what the door now looks like from the inside of the bedroom when it's closed.
This is what the door now looks like from the end when it's open.
This is what the complete finished installation looks like from the outside of the bedroom.
Some Additional Thoughts and Considerations...
1. Instead of using a two-sided deadbolt as we did, it would be nearly as effective to use a one-sided deadbolt and it would probably look better from the outside of the room. * We used a two-sided deadbolt because we wanted to be able to lock the door from the outside of the room, such as you might want to do on a home office door.
2. As with our Deluxe Door Security Kits for exterior doors, you could also install a Door Lock Guard not only on the deadbolt, but also on the door handle handle latch for even more security.
3. Depending on the size and layout of your house, you may should (or need to) install a Door Security Kit on more than one room in the house. For example, if you want to secure a home office, a bathroom, multiple bedrooms, the door between an attached garage and the living area of the home, doors to a basement or cellar, etc. You also may want to consider creating one of these quasi "safe rooms" on each floor of your house.
Frequently Asked Questions...
Is the Door Security Kit easy to install?
YES, if you can use an electric drill, then you can install the whole kit in under 1 hour from start to finish.
Who can you recommend to professionally install the Door Security Kit for me if I can't do it?
ANY handyman service (and they tend to be much less expensive than professional carpenters and locksmiths).
Hollow core doors vs. solid core doors, what's the difference, which is better?
Some homes have hollow interior doors which are referred to as hollow core doors and some have solid core doors which means that the door is completely solid. Solid core doors offer more security and are more soundproof than hollow core doors, therefore, if given the choice, a solid core door would be the better choice. HOWEVER, even if you have a hollow core door, adding a Door Security Kit would still dramatically improve the security and will definitely buy you some truly valuable extra time in an emergency situation.
