The Door Security Pro XL was specifically designed to address several issues.
1. Most homeowners want the longest door jamb reinforcement plate possible, and that's understandable. Here was the problem; if we manufacture a unit longer than 59" in the standard way using one piece of steel, the cost of the steel goes higher disproportionately the longer you go making it almost cost prohibitive, and it's the same issue with the cost of the shipping containers. Plus, the actual shipping cost when you go above 5 feet is much too exorbitant by comparison to shipping our shorter models. We've solved those issues by creating two 36" units that are stacked and mounted on top of one another.
2. The industry standard spacing between a door knob latch and a deadbolt stem in recent years has been 6", center to center. But what about older homes, and people who installed their deadbolt but didn't know what the standard distance was? This issue can present a problem for many customers because when the spacing on their door is not standard, it means that they have to use a 1" bi-metal hole saw and drill a new hole to accommodate the location of their deadbolt. Now that's not a big deal, but why not eliminate them having to do that if at all possible?
And so we've done that with the Door Security Pro XL. By placing one hole at each end of two 36" units, and locating each hole in strategic spots, the customer can create a combination of spacings that range from 4" up to 12-1/2", plus there's even a way to stretch that to almost 15"). For the two holes not being used (one at the very top and one at the very bottom) we include "filler plates" in the kit to go in those holes, which enhances the unit aesthetically. The image at right shows exactly how the spacing issue was solved. We placed 5 Door Security Pro XL's side-by-side for demonstration purposes. The bottom row of rectangular holes are used by the door knob latch and the top row of staggered rectangular holes are used by the deadbolt stem.

3. Our other units have about a 30 degree bend on one edge. This is done because a door knob strike plate needs a slight bend on the end to encourage the door knob latch to retract when you close the door. On our other units we suggest that you remove your door knob strike plate as it interferes with the installation of the Door Security Pro.
On the Door Security Pro XL the unit is completely flat and so you leave your current strike plates in place and install the Door Security Pro XL on top of it. This also gives you even more metal strength on the door jamb AND by it being flat you have the ability to move it sideways which enables you to make your door seal even tighter. If you look closely at the image at left, you can see how that's done.

The Door Lock Guard
The vast majority of the time when a door is forced opened, such as being kicked, shoulder-slammed or pried, it's the door frame that breaks. However, a small percentage of the time the door will actually split apart. Review the images below.
For a some time there's been a relatively simple, but "not great" solution to the problem. People put what's called a "lock reinforcer" on the door. It's a very thin "U" shaped metal device about 4-5" tall that caps the edge of the door around the door knob latch and/or the deadbolt stem. And that's ok, BUT it takes up too much space in the area between the door and the door jamb, which means that we would have to make the Door Security Pro out of a much thinner steel in order to also use a lock reinforcer and thinner steel we know doesn't work, so we won't do it.
Also, lock reinforcers are usually secured to the face of the door by tiny, short screws that barely penetrate the door. Translated, that means how can tiny screws that barely go into the door possibly keep a door from splitting open if a lot of force is applied to the door? They can't, so again, that's why we won't make or sell that type of a product.
Here's Our Solution, And It Works on Any Exterior Door
We even went one step further. What about when someone tries to pry the door open? No one addresses this issue, and it's a big problem. Typically, they will insert something like a pry bar or a large screwdriver in the crack between the door and the door frame near the door knob and/or deadbolt.
If you look at the images above, the picture on the left is what the door looks like from the inside of the house. The middle picture is what the door looks like from the outside of the house (but not closed). The picture on the far right is how we solved the "prying" issue. In the middle picture, notice that the door guard is a "U" shaped channel. In the far right picture, notice that the metal strip on the left has a "Z" shape. That "Z" goes into the "U" when the door is closed, thereby preventing someone from being able to pry the door open. It's secured to the door with stainless steel binding posts. Binding posts go though one of the Door Lock Guard plates, THROUGH THE DOOR and through the other Door Lock Guard. This acts like a vise clamping the door together, thereby preventing it from splitting apart. Plus, it can't be removed from the outside.
Please Note: Although we make this product in white, we suggest that you paint it to match the color of your door and door trim. By painting each component to match the background that it's mounted to, it blends in so well that it's hardly noticable.
What About the Hinges?
Most door hinges are mounted to the door frame using small, short, weak brass screws (take one of yours out and look at it). They are typically only about 1" long. That's NOT long enough to get into the wall studs behind the door frame. We include 3" screws in the Door Security Pro XL Kit so you truly can secure the hinges to the actual wall of the house instead of just to the thin, weak door frame trim that is on most houses.
